"Onions that are clearly labeled or that you buy at a local farmer's market should be OK," James E. Rogers, PhD, Consumer Reports' director of food safety research and testing, told the outlet. "But don't consume any onion unless you are absolutely certain of its source."

Investigators from the CDC, as well as state and local officials, were able to trace 20 clusters of illness to restaurants where raw onions were served. One sample of a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro and lime also contained an "outbreak strain" of Salmonella Oranienburg; the sick customer who received the cup said that it also contained onions. ProSource was a common supplier for many of the restaurants where people who became sick reported eating, including the one that served the aforementioned condiment cup.

"We are issuing this update early in our investigation as part of our continued commitment to transparency and early communication," Yiannas continued. "We will provide updates as we learn more during our continuing traceback investigation, especially if there are any updates to this critical public health advice."

UPDATE: On Monday, October 25, the FDA expanded its recall of the onions imported and distributed by ProSource to include onions that were included in meal kits from HelloFresh and EveryPlate, as well as onions from Keeler Family Farms and Potandon Produce.

"HelloFresh has learned that one of its ingredient suppliers is involved in the recall of Mexican-grown onions over the potential presence of salmonella bacteria," a company spokesperson said in a statement obtained by Food Safety News. "HelloFresh asks that its customers of home-delivered meals discard all onions received from July 7, 2021, through September 8, 2021." (Onions included in meal kits that were received after September 8 are not affected and should be safe to eat.)

The same date range — July 7 through September 8 — applies to onions included in meal kits from EveryPlate. Onions included in meal kits that were delivered after September 8 are not affected.

SECOND UPDATE: On Friday, November 12, the FDA announced that Wisconsin produce distributor Alsum Farms & Produce was voluntarily recalling 3-pound and 5-pound bags of whole yellow onions; 2-pound bags of both whole red and whole white onions; and 50-pound cartons of whole yellow onions, as there is a risk that they could be contaminated with salmonella.

According to the FDA, the onions are labeled "Produce of Mexico" and were sent to select retailers in Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin between July 13 and August 18 of this year. The FDA's website has detailed label and packaging information, as well as the lot codes for the affected bags of onions.

"The health and safety of our customers is our top priority," Heidi Randall, the COO of Alsum Farms & Produce, told the agency. "We advise consumers check their home pantries for any recalled product remaining to minimize even the slightest risk to public health."

Anyone who still has a bag of these onions is advised to either dispose of them or return them to the retailer where they were purchased for a full refund.
